Community Forum on the Affordable Care Act
LORAIN (Feb. 1, 2012): Mayra E. Alvarez, from the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, will provide an update
on the Affordable Care Act and the new consumer health
care website CuidadoDeSalud.gov., at a community forum, Wed.,
Feb. 1, 2012, from 2 to 3 p.m., at El Centro de Servicios
Sociales de Lorain, 2800 Pearl Avenue.
The community forum, presented by El Centro, UHCAN
Ohio, and Know Your Care, will provide the
opportunity to learn more about the new benefits of the law and
the impact on the Latino community in Ohio. It will also include
a live demonstration of the consumer tools and information
available on CuidadoDeSalud.gov, the first website in Spanish of
its kind to help consumers take control of their health care.
The website connects consumers to new information and resources
that will help individuals, families, and small businesses
access quality, affordable health care coverage.
The Affordable Care Act,
signed into law by President Barack Obama in March 2010, “marks
a crucial turning point for health care in the Latino community
by targeting the very issues preventing them from achieving
better health and extending care to up to 9 million Latinos
across the country,” according to the Obama administration.
Alvarez is the Director of Public Health Policy in the Office of
Health Reform at the Department of Health and Human Services,
Office of Health Reform where she has primary oversight
responsibility for coordinated and timely implementation of the
public health, prevention, and healthcare workforce policy

White House to Host Hispanic Community Action Summits
ELYRIA (Feb.18, 2012): The Obama Administration will host more
than dozen Hispanic Community Action Summits this year beginning
in Arizona, Florida, Ohio, and Texas. Speaking on a host of
issues affecting the Latino community ranging from the economy
to immigration, the White House officials will visit Elyria,
Saturday, Feb.18, 2012, at Lorain County Community College,
Elyria, OH.
Dozens of senior Administration officials and policy experts
will meet with Latino leaders and community stakeholders,
business owners, educators and state and local officials at each
summit, providing an opportunity for participants to address
important issues with White House and Cabinet agency officials.
Summit sessions cover a wide range of topics including jobs and
the economy, education, health care, and the need to fix our
nation’s broken immigration system. Each meeting will begin with
a morning plenary session followed by an innovative set of open
space workgroups where participants collaboratively set the
agenda and identify next steps for community action.
CHIP Candidates’ Forum to host Kaptur & Kucinich & Republican
Presidential hopefuls
LORAIN (Feb.22, 2012): The Coalition of Hispanic/Latino
Issues and Progress (CHIP) will host its annual primary
candidates’ forum, a debate for all contested primary election
candidates, and among the invitees are contenders for the 9th
District seat, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Cleveland)
and U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo). Invited also to
speak are the Republican Presidential hopefuls and judicial
candidates.
The debate, on Wed. Feb. 22, 2012, will take place at the St.
Joseph Community Center, on the 21st and Broadway
Avenue in Lorain, from 6:30 to 8:30p.m.
Lorain City Schools will tape the event and along with Lorain
County Community College, will broadcast the event on their
respective networks one week prior to the primary. The Forum
will be moderated by CHIP’s David Arredondo and Mary
Santiago.
Republican Presidential Candidates invited include Mitt Romney,
Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich.
Roundtable debates include also Republican U.S. Reps candidates
for the 7th district, and Republican U.S. Reps
candidates for the 9th district, candidates for
Lorain County Commissioner, and Democratic State reps candidates
for the 57th district.
FREE TAX Preparations for Lorain County residents
LORAIN COUNTY: The Lorain County EITC Coalition will be hosting
several free tax preparation clinics throughout the area for
Lorain County residents. The first session will be Sat., Feb. 4,
2012, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at two locations: at the Elyria
Public Library, West Branch (1194 West River Rd. North, Elyria,
Ohio 44035) and at the Lorain Public Library, Main (351 Sixth
Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052).
A free clinic will also take place Sat, Feb. 11from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the LCCC Learning Center inside St. Joseph Community
Center, on West 21st Street and Broadway Avenue,
Lorain. There are clinics also in Oberlin, Wellington and daily
walk-in hours at locations across the county. For more

The Lorain County EITC Coalition is a group of non-profit and
government agencies working to provide free tax preparation
filing and financial literacy resources for citizens of Lorain
County, Ohio. Coalition members include: Lorain County Labor
Agency, Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority, El Centro de
Servicios Sociales, United Way of Greater Lorain County, the
Ohio Benefit Bank, IRS, the Elyria Public Library, LCCC
Wellington Center, Lorain Public Main Branch, and many others.
Lorain’s Club Copa will spotlight Latino culture and host Salsa
lessons
LORAIN (Feb.10, 2012): Eileen Torres will present
“Africa: The Roots of Salsa,” to show how Salsa music originated
in Africa and later spread to Cuba, Puerto Rico, and further to
Central America and the United States, on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012
at 8 p.m., at Club Copa, 939 Broadway Ave, Lorain. The
presentation will include both lectures and videos, followed by
Salsa dance lessons. Appetizers and drinks will be provided.
