Members of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC)
will show their support by attending the Toledo City Council
meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at 4:00pm.
FLOC is calling the event a “Solidarity Holiday” – as Toledo
City Council votes on the fact-finding report for public
employees. “All fresh market tomato operations will be halted
until after 6:00 pm on September 20,” says Baldemar Velásquez,
president of the union. “We stand with Toledo City workers who
would be economically marginalized and with police and
firefighters whose ability to protect us and our homes will be
deteriorated.”
Whether their employer is a private company or a government
organization, FLOC understands that attacking working people is
never the answer. “Just like farmworkers, public employees need
a voice at the table and their concerns must be addressed,” says
Beatriz Maya, secretary/treasurer of FLOC. “Cutting
workers’ wages and attacking their rights is never the
solution.”
“We support the public workers”, says María García, FLOC
vice president. “Farm laborers are some of the most exploited
and maltreated workers in the country, but they know that
solutions should always include improving people’s working
conditions and wages, not tearing them down.”
