BGSU’s Gish Film Theater hosts Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday series

The Gish
Film Theater at Bowling Green State
University this fall will include the Sunday Matinees,
Tuesdays at the Gish and Thursday Night International Film
series.
Guest speaker Anthony Slide, a prolific author and friend of
Lillian Gish, will launch the 3 p.m. Sunday Matinees Series on
Sept. 11 with an illustrated lecture on the ways in which
studios promoted their films to audiences during Hollywood’s
“Golden Age.” He will present movie trailers, lobby cards, fan
magazines and the beautiful, hand-painted posters theaters
displayed to advertise coming attractions. Slide holds an
honorary degree from BGSU, and has visited the university a
number of times.
The theme of this fall’s Sunday Matinees is “Ladies of the
Silent Screen,” featuring Gish, Louise Brooks, Mary Pickford and
Norma Talmadge. Among the films that will be shown are “Kiki,”
“The Mothering Heart,” “Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley” and
“Prix de Beauté.” Lillian Gish stars in “The Mothering Heart”
with Walter Miller.
The Tuesdays at the Gish series begins at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13
with a showcase of pieces from the 2010
Ann Arbor Film Festival. Included are works by
award-winning independent filmmakers such as Barbara Hammer, Gus
Van Sant, Paul Winkler and James Duesing.
Others films shown during the fall will include “Angus,”
“Phantom of the Paradise,” “Repo Man,” “Revenge of the Nerds”
and others.
The International Film Series screenings are at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday nights. The first showing is “L’année dernière à
Marienbad” (“Last Year in Marienbad”) on Sept. 15. Other films
will include “Bal” (“Honey”), from Turkey; “A Hora da Estrela”
(“Hour of the Star”), from Brazil,
“Tulpan” (“Tulip”) from Kazakhstan,
and other international films.
All screenings are in the Gish Film Theater and are free and
