Pianist Irina Yurkovskaya to perform at The University of Toledo, April 18

Pianist Irina Yurkovskaya will deliver the final performance of the 2009/2010 season of the Dorothy MacKenzie Price Piano Series. Ms. Yurkovskaya will present a master class on Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and a recital on Sunday, April 18, 2010, at 3 p.m. Both events are free and will be held in the UT Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall on main campus.
 
Her program for the recital will include Beethoven’s 32 Variations in C Minor; Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24; Mendelssohn’s Variations Serieueses Op. 54; and Kapustin’s Variations Op. 41.

Ms. Yurkovskaya is a native of Belarus. She graduated from Belarusian Music Academy in Minsk in piano and voice performance. During and after her studies she was employed as a pianist with the Belarus Philharmonic, a vocal coach for the National Opera, and a vocalist for the National Chamber Choir.

From 1991 to 1995 Ms. Yurkovskaya performed and taught in Poland, Italy, and Belarus. She appeared as a soloist with orchestras under conductors Giuliano Silveri, Tadeush Chachaj, Gennady Provatorov, and Yury Yefimov. She has won two national piano competitions, as well as the Alessandro Casagrande International Piano Competition in Terni, Italy.
 
In 1995, Ms. Yurkovskaya was invited by Jerome Rose to come to the United States for further studies. She completed a Master’s degree in Piano and Voice Performance at Bowling Green State University, where she also won the 29th Annual Competition in Music Performance as a pianist.
 
In 1997, Ms. Yurkovskaya was awarded a University Fellowship of Temple University, where she received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance. She studied piano with Harvey Wedeen and voice with Christine Anderson.

She served there as an adjunct professor of piano and was on the faculty of the Nelly Berman School of Music as a piano and voice instructor from 1997 to 2007. Dr. Yurkovskaya currently operates her own piano studio in Annandale, Virginia, which she opened in 2007.
