is close to raising $1.5 million for new home

LORAIN, Feb. 26, 2010: Federal funding has been approved and the
blueprint is on the table. After three years of planning, the
only Latino social service agency in Lorain County could move to
a bigger home this year.
El Centro de Servicios Sociales
has raised 70 percent of its $1.5 million capital campaign for
renovating a former bank on the corner of Pearl Avenue and 28th
Street and make it its new headquarters.
“We're very excited that we are going to be a part of this
project and this change to the community,” said Victor
Leandry, Executive Director of El Centro “We're bringing
life...It's going to bring new traffic to Pearl Avenue. We're
hoping that that traffic also helps those businesses around,” he
said.
The agency entered a building exchange agreement with the city
of Lorain in 2007; the agency plans to move to the new 2800
Pearl Avenue site that will be
three times the size of its current 31st Street home,
that it has outgrown.
But the date for the move is still unknown because the
renovation cannot begin until the approved $584,000 federal
grant, secured by U.S. Sen. Sherrod
Brown and U.S. Rep. Betty
Sutton, arrives, Leandry said.
The renovation would then take about three months, he said.
Roughly 100 people including Lorain Mayor Anthony Krasienko
turned out to Principe de Paz Lutheran Church to learn
the agency's latest plans, followed by a tour of El Centro's new
site Feb. 26, 2010.
Leandry announced the agency has raised $1.01 million with the
help of community groups and banks, and the federal grant.
Leandry said although renovation can begin upon the arrival of
the federal funds, more help is still needed to reach their full
goal.
Generosa López-Molina,
dean of Academic Foundations at Lorain County Community College,
was among the present at the unveiling of the new site, and said
she is honored to support the agency.
“It's a historical time in the history of not only the Latino
community here in the city of Lorain but also in the history of
the (El Centro) organization,” López-Molina said “It has been
serving a greater community over the last several decades...It's
a pleasure for me to be here today celebrating.”
Leandry said their current 3,300 square feet Victorian-style
home, located 1888 E. 31st Street, is no longer
suitable for the agency's needs. The non-profit agency provided
services to 3,000 families last year.
“We have grown so much,” Leandry said “If you look at our
offices, each office is shared by two or three staff and
sometimes that is not the most conducive setting for us to
provide services to families,” he said.
The new 11,000 square feet Pearl Avenue building will have more
offices and caseworkers will not need to share space, will be
completely handicap-accessible as elevators will be available,
will be more energy efficient with an updated heating and
cooling system and will have a larger parking lot.
The new facility will also have a 50-person capacity community
conference room and two or three offices for other local
non-profits and agencies to meet on a rotating basis.
The City's Pearl Avenue Renovation Plans
The agency’s capital campaign project is part of an even bigger
city plan to fully renovate the Pearl Avenue area.
“I don't know if people have noticed that there’s been a lot of
changes in Pearl Avenue,” Leandry said “And people don’t realize
it because changes don't happen overnight.”
He said the plan for some businesses including El Centro is to
resemble the look of “El Viejo San Juan” or the architecture of
Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.
“We’re happy that we’re going to be the cornerstone, the main
project moving to this Pearl Avenue,” he said.
El Centro de Servicios Sociales is a non-profit agency that was
founded with the goal of helping the low-income and
non-English-speaking Latinos. The agency has expanded to provide
services to people from all backgrounds. They have a youth
program, and provide services in translation, finding
employment, tax preparation, family violence prevention and
support services for seniors. The agency also has the only money
management program for individuals with mental or physical
illness in Lorain County, Leandry said.
El Centro, “it’s a valuable resource for our community,” Leandry
said; “I’m making a call for the community to keep looking for
ways to help us,” he said.

millones necesarios para su nuevo hogar

LORAIN (el 26 de Feb. 2010): Fondos federales han sido aprobados y
el plano está sobre la mesa. Después de tres años de planear, la
única agencia latina de servicios sociales en el condado de Lorain
podría mudarse para una casa más grande este año.
El Centro de Servicios Sociales ha recaudado el 70 por ciento de los
$1.5 millones de fondos de su campaña capital para poder renovar un
antiguo banco en la esquina de Pearl Avenue y la calle 28, y
convertirlo en su nuevo sede central.
“Estamos bien emocionados de que vamos a ser parte de este proyecto
y este cambio a la comunidad,” dijo Victor Leandry, el director
ejecutivo de El Centro. “Estamos trayendo vida...Va a traer nuevo
tráfico a Pearl Avenue. Tenemos esperanza que el tráfico también
ayude a los negocios alrededor,” dijo.
La agencia entró en un acuerdo de intercambio de edificio con la
ciudad de Lorain en el 2007. La agencia planea mudarse a su nuevo
lugar en el 2800 Pearl Avenue, que será tres veces más grande que su
lugar corriente.
Pero todavía la fecha para mudarse no se ha fijado porque la
renovación no puede empezar hasta que la subvención de $584,000
llegue, dijo Leandry. Los fondos federales han sido aprobados por el
Sen. Sherrod Brown y Rep. Betty Sutton.
La renovación se completará en casi tres meses, dijo.
Cerca de 100 personas incluyendo a el alcade de Lorain Anthony
Krasienko atendieron a la iglesia Principe de Paz para conocer los
últimos planes de la agencia, y después hicieron un recorrido por el
nuevo edificio de El Centro el 26 de febrero, 2010.
Leandry anunció que su agencia ha reunido $1.01 millones con la

Leandry dijo que aunque la renovación podria empezar tan pronto
lleguen los fondos federales, añadió que la agencia necesita más

Leandry dijo que su actual lugar, estilo casa Victoriana de 3,300
pies cuadrados en 1888 E. en la calle 31, ya no sirve las
necesidades de su agencia. La agencia no lucrativa proveyó servicios
a 3,000 familias en el año pasado.
“Hemos crecido tanto,” Leandry dijo “Si ves nuestras oficinas, cada
oficina esta compartida por dos o tres empleados y a veces ese no es
el ambiente mas favorable para que podamos proveer servicios a las
familias,” dijo.
El nuevo edificio en Pearl Avenue de 11,000 pies cuadrados tendrá
más oficinas y los empleados no tendran que compartir las oficinas.
El lugar será completamente accesible al minusválido porque habran
ascensores, será más eficiente de energía, y tendrá un
estacionamiento más grande.
El nuevo edificio tendrá una sala de conferencia para la comunidad
con capacidad de 50 personas, y además dos o tres oficinas para que
otras agencias de la comunidad se puedan reunir alli en forma
rotativa.
Los Planes de Renovación de la ciudad para Pearl Avenue
La campaña capital de El Centro es parte de un plan aún mas grande
de la ciudad de Lorain para renovar
la área de Pearl Avenue.
“Yo no se si las personas se han dado cuenta pero estan ocurriendo
muchos cambios en Pearl Avenue,” Leandry dijo “Y las personas no se
dan cuenta porque estos cambios no pasan de la noche a la mañana.”
El dijo que el plan es que algunos negocios incluyendo a El Centro
se asemejen a el estilo arquitectural de El Viejo San Juan, Puerto
Rico.
“Estamos contentos que vamos a ser un punto de importancia, el
proyecto principal que se mudara a Pearl Avenue,” dijo.
El Centro de Servicios Sociales es una agencia no lucrativa que fue
fundada con la meta de ayudar a los latinos de bajo ingreso y que no
hablan inglés. La agencia se ha expandido para proveer servicios a
personas de todo origen. Tienen un programa para jóvenes, y proveen
servicios de traducción, para encontrar empleo, preparación de
impuestos, prevención de violencia familiar, y servicios para los
ancianos. También proveen el único programa en el condado de Lorain
que ayudan a manejar el dinero de personas con enfermedades mentales
o fisicas, Leandry dijo.
El Centro “es un recurso valuable para nuestra comunidad,” Leandry
dijo “Hago un llamado a la comunidad para que sigan buscando maneras
para ayudarnos,” dijo.
