Department of
Music presents the 2008 Vocal Arts Series
The University of Toledo
Department of Music has added four accomplished vocalists to its
Vocal Arts Series: John and Catherine Nix, Margaret Mack, and Tim
Shew. According to a UT press release, each of the vocalists will
provide a master class for students, as well as a recital that is
free and open to the public.
John and Catherine Nix, a tenor and soprano, respectively, are the
first artists in the series. They offer a public recital Friday,
January 11, 2008,
at
8 p.m. They will also hold a master class Saturday, January 12
from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

John Nix (M.M., M.M.E., Certification in Vocology) is an
Associate Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the
University of Texas at San Antonio
where he has created a Voice Research Laboratory. He has been
awarded several research grants including two from the National
Research Institute and his research has been published in The NATS
Journal, Vocalese, The Opera Journal and others. Nix’s students
serve on the faculties of major universities, have won major
apprenticeships, and sing with the
Metropolitan Opera Chorus. |
Catherine Nix has presented recitals and master classes in
universities across the country. Her operatic credits include
Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Gretel in
Hansel and Gretel, Lauretta
in Gianni Schicchi, and Angelina in Trial by Jury.
She is currently employed at The University of Texas at
San Antonio
where she teaches applied voice.

2-5 p.m. and a recital Sunday, January 20 at 3 p.m.

The Toledo Choral Society’s
performance of Handel’s Messiah. Ms. Mack made her professional
operatic debut in the 1995 world premiere of Modern Painters
with the Santa Fe Opera.
That same year her performance of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni
was reported in the Columbus Dispatch
as the “Best Classical Performance of 1995.” In June of 1997, Mack
debuted with the Aspen Opera
Theater in the same role, under the baton of maestro Julius Rudel.
Other important debuts include her singing alongside Eva Marton’s
Elektra in the Kennedy Center and her European debut with the West
Bohemian State Orchestra, singing Strauss Lieder. A graduate of
The University of Toledo, she
studied voice with Professor Barbara Rondelli-Perry.
Toledo’s own Tim Shew, internationally known
Broadway performer, comes to UT on Friday, January 25. Shew, a
tenor, will perform, talk with the audience, and coach student
singers. The public is invited to this free event, which will be
held from 1-4 p.m. in UT’s Center for the Performing Arts Recital
Hall.

Shew is an American Music Theatre master who has performed on
Broadway in productions such as the Bernstein/Comden and Green
Broadway production of Wonderful Town, starred as Jean
Valjean in The Tony Award winning Les Miserables, and in
The Scarlet Pimpernel as St. Cyr.
He made his film debut in the movie musical, The Producers.
For 15 years, he has produced “Broadway Sings on Park Avenue,” a
concert to benefit children affected by and infected with HIV and
AIDS. Mr. Shew has also done extensive work around the world as a
vocal director/clinician/adjudicator for theatre, choral and
show-choir festivals. |
